Our Mission: We create an exceptional learning environment for the study of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages and cultures, and we now offer Filipino and Vietnamese language study through the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA). Our faculty members conduct cutting-edge research that is transforming the fields of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese Studies. Our Major/Minor Programs: The department offers major programs (12 courses/36 credits) and minor programs (6 courses/18 credits) in Asian Studies, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Majors earn their B.A. in Asian Studies, B.A. in Chinese, B.A. in Japanese, or B.A. in Korean when they graduate.

Our Graduate Programs: The department offers two master’s degree programs. The M.A. in East Asian Languages and Cultures provides an intensive immersion in the civilizations of China, Japan, Korea, and/or Vietnam. Students may focus on literature, film, visual culture, history, religion, and/or linguistics. The M.A.T. in Chinese is designed for students preparing for careers in teaching Chinese language and in-service K-12 Chinese language teachers in New Jersey seeking career advancement.

 positions: asia critique: The department is now home to the editorial office of positions: asia critique, an award-winning journal offering fresh approaches to Asia scholarship. positions: asia critique publishes scholarly articles, timely commentaries, poetry, visual art, and political and philosophical debates grounded in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.
