01:165:494 Independent Study
Description:
Asian Languages and Cultures Independent Study work is offered in Chinese, 01:165:493, 494 (3, 3), Japanese, 01:565:495, 496 (3, 3), and Korean, 01:574:495, 496 (3, 3) and may be taken for a semester or a year. Interested students should first submit a study proposal and bibliography to secure a faculty sponsor's approval. Typically the proposal should be presented to the instructor with whom the student wishes to take independent study in the semester prior to that in which the course will be taken. Generally faculty members only accept students for independent study who have already taken at least one regular course with them. Having presented an approved proposal and a bibliography, the student pursues a research project under supervision of the faculty advisor. Periodic meetings and discussion of the progress of the project take place between the student and faculty member. It should be understood that Independent Study cannot be substituted for a regular course. Normally it is not counted toward the requirement for the major or minor. Instead it is considered to be an opportunity for students to do extra research work in a field in which they are most interested to additionally enhance their foundation in the major or minor field. Any subject matter that is covered under a regular course cannot be taken as an Independent Study. Moreover, Independent Study cannot be considered as an alternative to a language class.
