Abstract: On the publication of Visual Culture in Contemporary China (Cambridge University Press, 2015), Professor Tang in this presentation will reflect on issues and methods involved in a growing academic field, and consider what constitutes contemporary Chinese visual culture and what its challenges and implications may be. Taking the topic of contemporary Chinese art as an example, Professor Tang suggests a paradigm shift is needed in our approach to visual culture produced in China today.
