This volume is the polished version of the set of lexical field questionnaires developed and used in a multi-year project investigating the boundary between Wu and Jiang-Hwai Mandarin dialects supported by the Luce Foundation. It contains three questionnaires in the form of word lists: a long list of over 1900 lexical items, a medium list of 440 critical dialect vocabulary, and a short list of 60 for quick broad surveys. Also included is a short guide for the use of the handbook in the field, as well as sample completed questionnaires.

本书作为国内第一次单独出版的汉语方言词汇方面的调查手册，是罗斯中美两国合作研究项目“江苏境内江淮官话与吴语的分界”的成果之一。前此面世的各种方言调查字表、词表大多偏重名词，不重视动词、形容词及虚词的调查；重语音不重视词汇本身；没有连读变调表；词汇表需复印使用，而且没有留下调查记录的空白处，不便使用。本书弥补了以上这些不足，各词条按音序排列，有三个词表和一个连读变调调查表。词表中的详表收1900多个词条，用于深入调查；简表440多个词条，是更加核心的词汇，用于深入调查前的普查；短表60个词条，是最核心的词汇，可以用来绘制方言地图。书后附该项目的调查地点目录及三个方言点短表调查示范。
