The classical Chinese tradition is well known – and properly so – for developing some of the most nuanced modes of interpretation in world literature. An equally significant part of this development, however, also involved a lengthy debate in the tradition of how not to interpret. This talk will explore these discussions of improper ways of reading, as well as why (claimed) mistaken modes of interpretation were seen as so dangerous.
