Lecture: "Global Partnership: A New Frontier of Japan-U.S. Relationship" (Ambassador Mikio Mori, Consul-General of Consulate General of Japan, New York)
Wednesday, 23 October 2024,  2:00pm -  3:00pm
Location AB West 6051

“The U.S.-Japan Alliance has reached unprecedented heights.” This was clearly stated in the Joint Leaders Statement released this past April. In the face of such urgent issues as the Ukrainian crisis, situation in the Middle East, successive missile launches by North Korea, and unilateral attempts to change the status quo, cooperation between Japan and the U.S. has become more crucial than ever, not only from a bi-lateral perspective, but also from a global point of view.

In his talk, Ambassador Mikio Mori will share his perspectives on how the Japan-U.S. relationship has changed, grown, and deepened since his first appointment in New York in the 1980s, at the height of Japan-bashing and trade friction, to his third and present assignment as Consul General. Japan now has a new prime minister, and the U.S. is preparing for a presidential election. As a professional diplomat engaged in Japan-U.S. relations for more than 30 years, he will provide his outlook for the future of the relationship and invites future global leaders at Rutgers to reflect upon these thoughts in their research and career planning. He hopes that they, too, will contribute to the continued vitality and strength of Japan-U.S. relations.
