The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of two landmark events in the history of Rutgers-Japan relationship: an untimely death of Kusakabe Taro, the first of the many young samurai from Japan who graduated from the Rutgers College, and the departure to Japan of his friend, tutor, and a Rutgers alumnus, William E. Griffis.
